Such A Dreamy Bathroom!

I wasn’t surprised when Architect and Design firm Alisberg Parker won an award for this wonderful bathroom.

The Greenwich Connecticut firm is not only exceptionally talented in creating and renovating spaces but also in decorating those spaces with the just the right materials. The effect, as you can see above, is stunning! I love how the large marble floor tile is off set by the small brick subway tiles behind the vanity. To the right is a gorgeous free standing tub and to the left a walk in shower.

Here is a closer view of the tub. It is beautifully set in a cathedral peak with lovely windows to capture the view. The lighting choice is sublime. Overhead lights would have cast a harsh glow and I think chandeliers in the bath are just getting too overdone. Here they selected wall mounted arm lamps for soft and romantic lighting - a very interesting choice which I just love!!

The walk in shower also has interesting lighting which echo's the angles and lines of the shower. Alisberg Parker did a wonderful job of incorporating the angles and eaves of the house into the shower’s design.

My Christmas Wish for You!

To all my readers, those who celebrate Christmas and those who may not, I want to share with you my personal Christmas wish for all of us. A wish for peace and peacefulness.

Every few weeks I receive a very uplifting story from my friends, Joan, Katie and Meb of The Miracle Chase. I was so inspired reading their story of Rose Mapendo, recipient of the UN Humanitarian of Year Award, that I had to share it with you. Rose’s story brought tears to my eyes and her personal journey for peace filled my heart. Please take a moment and read Rose’s story HERE.

Over the next year my Christmas wish is that we all get better at achieving an inner peace so that we can all become more open, loving and accepting of others. Finding time to enjoy the simple pleasures of life and slowing down to appreciate both beauty we bring to others and the beauty they bring to us.

In this humble quest for personal peace may our actions resonate outward – small and slow but begin to radiate and glow stronger throughout the year.

Thank you for continuing to let me into your homes and your lives through Willow Décor. I feel very blessed that we are sharing this journey together.

Holiday Window Boxes III and Giveaway Winner!!!

Every year one of Willow Décor’s most popular holiday posts is Decorating Holiday Window Boxes. Even if your house does not have outdoor window boxes you can use store bought containers to bring the look inside. Here are some new favorites I have collected over the year.

This first window box is beautiful, simple and inexpensive to create. Different pines and boxwood are easily in found out in your yard. Here the owner added blueberry branches and some glass icicle ornaments to add sparkle – Lovely!

From decorator extraordinaire, Martha Stewart, what caught my eye most were the branch trellises she added to hold up the pine branches. What a creative touch which adds so much interest and texture, as well as a wonderful place to thread the bow!

Another simple, beautiful collection of pines and pinecones. This would look as pretty on sideboard in your dining room or mantel as it does outside. Again very low cost to recreate.

Something a bit easier to find for my southern readers; here moss, magnolia leaves and ornaments make a pretty holiday window box.

On of my favorite ideas comes from the Bachman Holiday house in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Here an old shutter creates an indoor window box filled with potted poinsettias and highlighted by a row of birch branches. Simply gorgeous! This is a spectacular mantle piece and would look fabulous in any home!

Meeting Celeste and Our Best EVER 3 Fine Grains Giveaway!

What a busy few weeks I have had traveling around the US!! I just returned back from a wonderful visit to Palo Alto, California to visit my sister! I was also able to stop by and finally meet designer, Celeste Randolph of Ambiance Interiors. Here we are enjoying the spectacular California sunshine on her back patio!

Dreamy Cape Cod Shingle Style Home

On a waterfront lot in Buzzards Bay, part of Cape Cod, Massachusetts, Dewing and Schmid Architects designed the most amazing home.

The family wanted a compound and they created a perfect retreat. A main house has five bedrooms with a two car garage and apartment above the garage, as well as a pool and pool house/guest house.

Every room has direct views of the water and the shingle style house is designed with a wonderful abundance of porches to capture the spectacular views. Notice the covered porch on the second story to the right.

Here is a closer look. What an amazing view of the ocean!

Interior Designer, James Radin choose the gorgeous muted color palette. Soft blue accents in antique glass seltzer bottles and glass buoy floats compliment the blues of the ocean views. I love the step down dining and living areas.

Dewing and Schmid Architects are masters at creating wonderful nooks to capture views and provide an oasis for quiet moments of reflection, like this built in desk with porthole window.

Bathrooms are equally muted relying on the beauty of marble to speak for itself. Notice the curve of each vanity – almost as lovely as the ocean view.

No family compound is complete without a stunning pool/guest house. Again designer, Radin, keeps the palette soft and neutral so as not to compete with the lovely architecture or the views.

I love finding new shops and on line sites with unique items– especially with the Holidays coming up. I wanted to share with a few of my all time favorites and some of my new finds! First, for those of you in the Boston area one of my new favorite shops is Pine Straw in Wellesley!

This shop is decked out with cool architectural elements and walls covered in antique barn wood. It is a perfect spot to find a unique hostess gift, or a great little home accessory.

I love the new tin place card holders I just bought-

and the old glass doorknob that is a wine stopper, but there is so much more!!

I own a pair myself, and following Monika’s keen advice I packed them for my trip last year to Aspen. I wore them during Fashion Week and felt ever so cool and “in the know”!

Re-working My Home– From Conservatory to Library

You have all followed the décor of my Conservatory.

My wonderful framed intaglios, (Dave hanging them just right), my crystal and mercury glass holiday decorations, landscaping the gardens beyond. But, what you may not know, is how little this room has been used over the past year.

You see I believe this is one of the most beautiful rooms in my home. I used to love to sit with my children and listen to them practice scales and new songs. But alas, homework, sports and friends have distracted them and sadly I am giving up every Mother’s fight “You need to practice your piano!” – They have moved on to other things and finally so must I.

So what to do with this room? My husband has always wished for a library. A wonderful wood paneled space to work, read and relax. So we have decided to say goodbye to the piano and hello to a new library.

Here are some of my inspiration photos. This is Christie Brinkley’s Great Room of her Tower Hill home. Not quite a library but I have always loved the light wood and the detailing on her crown molding. The room is beautiful, and with windows on two sides the light is similar to my Conservatory.

This has been in my files for a long time. I found this wonderful room on MLS. I adore the wood ceiling, leaded glass bookcases and glass arched door.

This room, from Mrs. Howard, really shows the type of wood I want. I love the paneling, although this room has much higher ceilings and is much more grand than my smaller space.

These light tones are perfect, but I do not like so many knots in the wood. This room also from Mrs. Howard.

I am sure you remember my adoration of David Easton’s library in Aspen. This light wood is limed and then washed with grey antiquing glaze. This is interesting as my painted doors will need to be stripped and a glaze may make the new wood and the old wood much easier to match.

If you look closely you will notice I only have one wall for bookcases to the right. It is also very narrow from wall to door molding. The Conservatory is very open to the Living Room right now, so I will need to add some doors. I want to keep the light coming in and do not want to lose too much space with swinging doors. I love pocket doors but I am afraid it will close off the room too much. However, it would give me another area for more bookcases. Hmm – lots of choices to make.

These glass does are similar to what I want. They slide over themselves so I won’t lose any space, but I prefer them to have glass to the floor.

I like the arch over the bar in this library. It mimics the arches of my French doors. I wonder if my wall with the intaglios should have an bookcase with and arch.

Here is a wonderful arched window in a library just being built down the street from me. The bookcase is straight, even though the main window has an arch.

I love the niche in this library for the couch. If I create a niche I think I would place Dave’s desk in front of it but should the niche be arched? I think this niche would have looked great with an arch.

This Library from Fairfax and Sammons is a bit closer to what I was thinking, but the arch is much too deep for my space. It would definitely need to be scaled back.

I am hoping to have the sketches done by the end of November, but as you can see we are still in the design phase, so let me know your thoughts! Light wood or darker wood? Stained or Glazed? Glass sliding doors or closing in the room a bit with pocket doors? Arched bookcase or straight? This is turning into such a fun project! Excited to hear your thoughts!

Stunning Aspen Home

Last Spring when we were in Aspen I was flipping through a wonderful local, mountain magazine and spied the most incredible home. Built by a Connecticut couple, it was not your typical heavy, dark wood and stone fireplace mountain retreat. Designed and decorated by the famous David Easton, I immediately tore out the pages to keep in my inspiration file. Fast forward to September and again I spy the same beautiful retreat. I am even more smitten with new images in Veranda Magazine. Of course this house is worthy of 10 magazine shoots so I wanted to share it with you in case you missed it.

The entry is stunning! All the wood in the home was limed, brushed to bring up the grain, and then washed in a pale gray and antique glaze. The effect is a lighter Scandinavian feeling – and it is a stunning change from the usual mountain décor.

The dining area is beautiful. Notice the gorgeous hand painted wallpaper; it was carefully recreated from a palace in Stockholm. The crystal chandelier adds just the perfect amount of elegance and sparkle and the limestone fireplace completes the room.

The Great room is a stunning mix of soft blues, creams and taupes. The view is as spectacular as the room décor. David Easton reminds us how to design a room where the decor compliments rather than competes with the view. Very few designers could orchestrate this as masterfully as Easton. This room is breathtaking.

In the library we see a better close up of the wood tones.This particular room has been an inspiration for me in my home. I am in the process of creating a room with a very similar feeling in the near future so stay tuned.

The master bedroom is another spectacular space. The iron bed, Chelsea textile linens, antique rug and limestone fireplace just make me swoon. What do you think readers – would you love to ski all day on the mountains of Aspen and then return to this gorgeous home. I am not sure I would ever even get to slopes!

My New Kitchen Slipcovers!!!

Back to school and back to projects that needed to get to done! I am so excited to share with you my new kitchen slipcovers!

Let’s start at the beginning, with two teenagers, a big, hairy dog and an Italian family who loves Marinara sauce; my kitchen was not a perfect environment for my linen, upholstered chairs! We’ve been living with dish towels draped over the seats to catch any spills– not very pretty. I needed some washable slipcovers and I needed them pronto!

As always I had an inspiration photo to show my wonderful seamstress (Photo: Things That Inspire). These were close to what I envisioned. I liked the straight lines and the overall length. I wanted something to cover the chair but not be too fussy.

I also needed the slips to be washable. I found these wonderful oversized napkins from French Laundry Home. I like their “grainsack” look and feel. They were big enough to cover just the seat, so we needed something extra for the skirting piece.

You might remember my wonderful linen blend curtains I found on sale last year at Country Curtains.

I bought extra fabric for $6 a yard and had these wonderful slipcovers made for my club chairs. Read all about my Family Room redo HERE. Fortunately I had enough fabric left to use for the skirting.

Here is the chair before…(not pasta friendly!)

And here is the slipcover after! Large enough to handle any spill and simple to throw in the wash!!

I love the back – I didn’t want any ties.

The hidden Velcro does the trick of keeping it neat and in place.

The bench also needed a bit of covering up. As much as I loved the Antique printed grainsack I bought from Kym Fraser of 3 Fine Grains, it was much too valuable to be stained with hot fudge!

A quick call to my dear friend, Wendy Lewis of Textile Trunk, and a more reasonably priced antique grainsack was on its way. We took out the stitching on both sides, sewed in the corners and added the ties. Look closely and you can see the fold (that was the bottom of the sack) still in the cover.

An indestructible and beautiful slipcover!! You can also see the chairs with their new, pretty dresses peeking through!

The lighting was not the best when I took the picture this afternoon, but I wanted to show you how wonderful the new slips look in the Breakfast Room!

Sometimes it seems daunting to live with linen or all white furniture. Slipcovers are the secret! Your kids can eat hot fudge and still live in a beautiful room without worry.

English Country Cotswold Home

I have always been enamored with stone homes, especially those wonderful properties that are nestled in the gorgeous English countryside.

When the owners wanted to expand the kitchen, but ensure that the charm of the historic stone house was incorporated, they called on the talented, Yiangou Architects.

A closer look shows you their keen attention to detail. They used large timbers of green oak to frame out the new addition in an effort to seamlessly tie it back into the original home.

Above is the main entry of the existing home. You can see the beautiful millwork, bannister and wonderful ceiling beams. Notice the gorgeous flooring. The new addition needed to look as if it evolved over time as the house has evolved.

Above is the new kitchen and family room space. You can see the wonderful post and beam design really compliments the entry of the home. The entry beams are repeated, and the flooring is similar in color and scale.

Windows on three sides capture the light through out the day and into the early evening. The gardens are visible at every turn. Also notice the wonderful fireplace.

French doors give you a closer glimpse into the spectacular English gardens.

We said goodbye to the beach this weekend. Another summer come and gone. Thank you so much, Readers, for being so patient while I disconnected from the internet during the month of August and re-connected with my family and friends. I am refreshed and re-inspired! It is great to be back! Looking forward to sharing some of my exciting, new projects with you through out the Fall!

Cape Cod Beauty!

I have been spending some down time with my family at the beach – no TV and limited computer access. Peaceful and relaxing time. Being at the ocean is so inspirational to me that I wanted to share with you this gorgeous home in Cape Cod, designed by the wonderful firm, Hart Architects.

A spectacular ocean front property renovated to support a modern family’s needs. I love the softness of the crushed gravel driveway, so common on the Cape.

The architects were phenomenal, really paying to attention to every beautiful detail. Let’s have a look inside.

The living room is lovely. Notice the deep arched entry ways and beamed ceilings. I love the x detailing on the doors and the soft graceful turn of the staircase. Notice that the room is painted white, but because there is so much architectural interest, the room is warm and inviting. Looking through the doorway on the right you can see the library.

I adore the warmth of an all wood room. You can see a bit of the ocean through the French doors - I could spend hours here!

The family room is lovely of palette of white and soft blue. You can see the kitchen beyond. I like the columns and the half wall division between the two spaces. Its visually gives each room its own defined area, but still feels very open and airy.

Another photo which shows the kitchen more closely. White cabinetry, subway tiles and bin pulls keep it classic but fresh.

A second kitchen area has a wonderful cozy keeping area. Perfect for enjoying that morning cup of coffee. Notice the peaked ceiling – with the ceiling height and the windows and French doors, the space appears much larger.

More French doors invite you out to enjoy the spectacular vistas. I love this little seating nook.

Finally a spectacular sunroom! Notice the gorgeous ceiling and the fireplace – Fabulous!!!

Red, White and Blue Decorating

On the Fourth of July I love to show images that I have been collecting of Red, White and Blue decorating! Here is a favorite - I adore this boys room, especially the sail!

Of course this antique Union Jack flag becomes artwork when hung above a beautiful blue velvet sofa.

I love this clever idea of using an oar as a curtain rod and a flag as a curtain! Whimsical and fun!!

Small flags in red, white and blue prints liven up these built in beds, but its the boat flags painted on the floor that really caught my eye!

Finally a bright blue checked floor and trim turns this porch from blah to bold!

Ahh Sweet Italy!!

Back from a fabulous trip with lots of inspiration and a bit of travel info to share!

The Almafi Coast was spectacular and a favorite excursion was to the lovely hilltop village of Ravello. We had an extraordinary time exploring the two main villas in town, Villa Rufolo and Villa Cimbrone. (above)

As you can see the gardens and the views were breathtaking!

First, I want to let you know that I have been to Rome three times. Above is a photo of Ancient Roman Forum. The history is overwhelming - so this trip we decided to finally hire a private guide to take us around. What a difference a guide makes!! We all learned so much and really the cost was very reasonable. David Lown is an art historian and he was fabulous! If you are heading to Rome this summer do contact him HERE and enjoy learning all about this fabulous city.

The greatest highlight of our trip to Rome was our excursion 35 feet UNDER St. Peter’s Basilica called “The Ufficio Scavi Tour” (Tour by Office of Excavations). Only a lucky 120 people are taken down each day, an incredible privilege, as St. Peters has over 20,000 visitors per day! We were taken down in small groups of 12, two levels below St. Peter’s to what was Vatican Hill over 1900 years ago. We saw St. Peters final resting place (and bones) as well as the tombs of the previous Popes. A special area of Rome which enchanted us was the Villa Borghese Park. The first photo of this post and this photo are just a small sampling of what you will see. We spent a wonderful Sunday touring the Villa Borghese (filled with gorgeous Bernini sculptures) and the surrounding gardens. Do not miss this!

Another highlight was Pompeii – Words just can’t describe how we felt walking along the streets of this ancient buried city. I was incredibly taken by the Frescos, like this one above, that are still intact. We also decided to hire a personal guide in Pompeii. Enjoying Italy!

We are settling in to life Italian style! And I must say they really know how to live- the pace is slower and you really stop to enjoy life!

How could we quickly rush thru the fantastic gardens of the Villa Rufolo in Ravello?

Or not slow down and admire the beauty

while we climb up and down the steps of Positano.

Or hike along a trail the locals call

Amazing Tuscan Stone Villas

In researching my trip to Italy this summer I came across the most amazing and talented architect, Domenico Minchilli. I love architects who respect the integrity of the original home and restore and enhance the property. Domenico Minchilli is a master!

He and his equally talented wife, Elizabeth have restored their own Tuscan stone villa and penned several wonderful books about Italian Stone, Villa and Farmhouse renovations. Their most recent is Italian Rustic. a marvelous book which outlines building in the Tuscan style.

Their own home, Pergolaccio, is also the subject of a book and has been in many, many national and international magazines.

The interiors of Pergolaccio are equally beautiful. I adore the amazing Dining area!

But one of my favorites it their restoration of Torre Gentile.

The outside areas are as spectacular as the inside

Crumbling walls were repaired to create beautiful vignettes

The heart of the home is the family room – Notice the beamed ceilings and tiled pass thru

The fireplace is such a stunning focal point. Also notice the texture and depth of the plaster.

The house is filled with wonderful nooks and crannies like this stone shelf that turns a into a desk and chair into a a unique office area.

I adore the way the old Tuscan stone peeks out from the plaster walls. The wall is so beautiful no headboard is needed. Look thru the doorway into the lovely bath.

Here is close up the bath vanity. Notice the lovely Italian tile and skirted vanity

This bedroom has a more ethereal feeling. The ceiling beams have been pained and sheers dress the windows – the shape and patina of the iron bed is to die for.

Here an arched window adds additional interest to an already pretty bath.

Another fireplace is found in the kitchen area. Likely the original cooking hearth.

The kitchen is a mix of new appliance with antiques. I love the contrast of the old, worn beams with shiny, stainless steel pendant. Floors are gorgeous!

The outdoor patio takes my breath away! Truly a stunning renovation.

Dreams Happen!

In case you can’t get there, like me, but want to see these little gems I decide to preview a few of my favorites. You see my sister Lisa, is co-chairing the Dreams Happen Fundraising Event –which auctions off these lovely little homes for charity

The Dreams Happen event benefits Rebuilding Together Peninsula, a non profit charity that builds volunteer partnerships to rehabilitate homes and community facilities for low income homeowners and neighbors, so they can live independently in warmth and safety .

The playhouses are wonderful and cover every style, like this adorable Cotswold Cottage!

Belgian Dream House

I adore the Belgian style and when I stumbled upon this home from Arcobaleno I knew I had to share it with you. Take a long look at the photo above. the antique doors open to the most stunning of rooms.

The fireplace is truly a work of art!

Here is a closer look. The shape is beautiful but also notice the fireback in the fireplace and the wide wood floors. They looked pickled or bleached. So pretty.

Above is a close up of the Swedish corner cabinet. But take a closer look at the plaster treatment on the walls – Decorating well is a layering process– starting with these incredible walls, adding the lovely antiques and accessories create a warmth and unparalleled patina.

Here is the view looking from the family room into the kitchen. Notice the stacks of books on the bench and the house model. Again little details that add to the beauty of this home. Also take a closer look at the kitchen. You can see the interesting cabinets which go directly to the ceiling. Also notice the stacks of bowls under the center island.

Dishes and bowls are stacked on shelving- these mirror the bowls under the center island. I love the rusty scrolled brackets.

A view from the center island looking towards the eating area. The long wall of built in cabinetry is to die for. The crystal chandelier is perfect choice. With the large window I am sure it sparkles all day long.

Beds Tucked Away & Splendid Willow

What’s your favorite antique? Several other fabulous bloggers and I were recently interviewed about our favorite antiques over at the wonderful blog, Splendid Willow. Monika and I are like family – we love the same style (though she is younger and much cooler than I am)!! Stop over and read thoughts from several top bloggers and check out Monika’s wonderful blog. I am working on renovating my master bedroom. I have long been enamored with beds that are built in or tucked into wall cabinets. This image above from Tracery Interiors has been in my inspiration file for quite some time. I adore color and patina on the cabinetry. I also love the softness the upholstered headboard adds.

I saved this image from Pursley Architects several years ago. I have always admired the way the architect created a more cozy space in the bedroom by adding the free standing wall. The u-shaped wall creates a wonderful coziness to what could be a large impersonal space. The addition of upholstered walls, headboard and oval mirror really caught my eye. Lovely!

Here is a wonderful wood built in area by Windsor Smith. The cabinetry is built all around the room and creates the arched bed area. Look more closely and you see it is actually closets. In an old home like mine this is beautiful way to add more closet/storage space. The mirrored panels behind the bed also add the illusion of a larger room and create a spectacular reflection for the crystal sconces.

This bedroom from Skona Hem shows a less expensive way to get that built-in, tucked away feeling. Simple linen panels add a special ambiance to this gorgeous room. Also notice the spectacular mirror and Swedish fireplace. I adore this room.

A Country Farmhouse

There is nothing more charming to me than a wonderful farmhouse. Old or new, I love the warmth and homey feeling!

I wanted to share this farmhouse from Rehkamp Larson Architects. When their clients purchased the property, the original farmhouse was in shambles. The owners envisioned a more modern, but classic styled foursquare farmhouse.

They wanted an expansive porch to wrap around the home to enjoy lovely views of the beautiful property.

Inside I fell in love with the old fashion styled farmhouse kitchen. Notice the large windows with mullions only on the top half. Also notice the huge wood center island. A bridge faucet and open shelving really helps capture the farmhouse style.

From this angle you can see the apron front sink. Another detail which really adds to the farmhouse feel are the exposed hinges on the inset cabinet doors, as well as the latches and bin pull hardware.

I adore this adjacent butler's pantry. Also notice the glass front cabinets and under cabinet shelf.

The bath is a wonderful reinterpretation of an old farmhouse bath. The slipper tub is sculptural and beautiful. The tile and high dressers also add a feeling of age and history.

Another favorite is the clapboard clad sunroom, outfitted with gas grill and hood. A great space for entertaining. Notice how the brick walls are complimented by the bright color palette. The colors really update and modernize the farmhouse feel.

The deep porch with beadboard ceiling creates a marvelous space for enjoying the vista. The very talented team at Rehkamp Larson Architects did an excellent job of creating a modern farmhouse for their client. To see more of their work click HERE.

Adding Some Patina with Wallpaper?!

I am generally not a wallpaper person. I prefer more stark walls to showcase my antiques and artwork. But the Gustavus Collection of papers from Zoffany has me completely in love with wallpaper again. You generally don’t think wallpaper can add patina to a room but let’s have a look. The paper above is called Gustavus and I love the soft faded feeling. It is a perfect backdrop for antiques.

Generally I do not favor florals, but the Elenora paper is just so lovely. Wouldn’t this perfect in a dining room or sunroom? Again, I am in love the muted palette.

I adore this image – the paper, the chairs covered in nubby linen, the antique mirror and chest – I could live in this room.

This paper is called Medici, I love how faded the edges of the design are. These papers really add another layer of depth and Patina to the room. I love how aged they seem.

Our Summer Trip to Italy

This summer we are taking the family to Italy. We are not “ten cities in ten days” type of travelers. We like to linger in one place and really explore off the beaten path. When Dave and I lived in Germany we spent many weekends in Italy, but because we often drove, we never went too far south.

So this year, we thought we would first take the kids to see the highlights of Rome and the Vatican; and of course the Fountains.

I am pretty excited about our private tour of Villa Borghese.

And then, as they both have been studying Latin and Pompeii, we head to Pompeii to explore the ruins.

But most of our time will be spent relaxing on the Amalfi coast, a place we have never been.

We plan on hiking the interesting trails from town to town.

Attending family cooking school to learn to make some yummy regional dishes.

In my travel search I came across this fabulous site for renting Italian villas, you can see more HERE. I found an amazing one I wanted to share with you in Positano.

Villa Casa Giusy has the most gorgeous views.

But the inside is equally spectacular – I love the relaxed decor.

Can you imagine living here year round?

The kitchen is just wonderful notice the iron scroll work on the door. I can imagine myself rolling out a big sheet of homemade pasta on that table.

The bedroom is also beautiful. I adore the tile floor. I am so excited to see all the beautiful handmade tiles.

If any of you have been to this area and have recommendations I would love to hear from you. We are so excited and I can’t wait to bring back photos and inspiration from trip. I wonder where it will lead us...

Dreamy Spring Decor!

I have long been a fan of Designer, Lisa Teague from New Hampshire. Her beautiful work was introduced to me by the fabulous interior photographer, Jamie Salomon. Above is a peek into Lisa’s gorgeous Living Room.

Her color palette is so beautiful, soothing and soft without being too monochromatic. So often we see soft color palettes that turn boring, but Lisa has an extraordinary talent to turn a soft color palette into an exquisite room.

Here is another angle of the living room – notice the pop of blue on the legs of ottoman. The blue is echoed more softly on the back wall and on banister by the stairs. These are lovely ways to introduce a pop of blue and then soften it by adding paler shades elsewhere in the room.

I love her country kitchen with blackboard wall and open shelving. Notice the addition of the floor runner to add a bit of blue.

Another shade of pale, gray blue in the bedroom.

I adore the antique linen chair.

Gorgeous Stone Shingle Style Home

I have always loved the charm of shingle style homes. I love the curving architecture and the all the extraordinary details.

When the homeowners wanted to renovate this 1900’s spectacular home, they called on the great talents of Andrew Reck of Oak Hill Architects.

Let’s have a look inside. The house was formerly owned by celebrity chef Todd English, who installed the stone pizza oven in the kitchen. What a wonderful luxury. Notice the thick chunky legs of the center island. I love the heft and country feel they bring to the kitchen.

Interior Designer, Keith Frederick did a beautiful job with the interiors. I adore this built in banquette. The beautiful shade of blue painted on the back wall of the bookcases is a stunning backdrop to the ironstone. To the right is the transition to living room.

Perhaps my favorite feature of this house is the curved Bath. The tile floor is amazing. I also love when architects thoughtfully place windows beside mirror in Baths. The natural light is much more flattering on your face when you are getting ready. The vanity is gorgeous!

The Library above is truly a work of art! Notice the woodwork and the curved window wells.

Here is a closer view of the Library. Notice the period windows with diamond mullions on the upper half. The woodwork and details in this room are outstanding.

Mediterranean Bath Oasis

I wanted to share with you this beautiful bathroom I recently came across by architectural firm Myers Design Inc. and wonderful designer, Letitia Holloway. I love the old world feel with the furniture like vanities, arched windows and beamed ceilings. Notice the sunken round tub and chandelier - what a luxury!

The curved shower is just stunning. I adore curved walls - they are usually expensive to create but they are always beautiful. It really evokes an European spa like feeling.

The limestone flooring and tiles really are beautiful. Also notice that the cabinetry is more furniture like rather than built in - this also adds to the room like/spa feeling of the space. Artist Spotlight - Anders Moseholm

When I first saw Anders Moseholm's paintings while traveling in Denmark, I literally stopped in my tracks. I was mesmerized by his interpretation of interior spaces. Beautiful, stunning interiors of old buildings and libraries, none are specific rooms of course, just bits and pieces of striking architecture redefined.

Anders does not sign his work on the front of the canvas. He prefers you, alone, to enter the painting and be the viewer. In the case of the painting above, he wants you experience the quietness and beauty of the room without being distracted by his signature.

My favorites of course are his interiors. This large, blue painting above will hang in my beach house . It is striking against the all white walls. I love how his work has a wonderful blurriness that makes it seem ethereal.

I also just purchased this small painting titled "Five Red Pillows" It is a one of his more rare smaller oils. I adore it!

Dave and I had the great pleasure to meet Anders in his studio during our last visit to Denmark. As you can see Anders' work is striking and often larger in scale.

Dreaming in Brick

I have been waiting until my blog was redesigned to share this fabulous brick home with you. Of course this house is stunning but it is captured spectacularly by architectural photographer, Peter Montanti of Mountain Photographics. He is a master at photographing interior and exterior architectural details with over 30 years experience.

The house, nestled in northern Georgia, is built with post and beams and General Shale brick. The details of the house are just amazing. I fell in love with this photo of the twilight reflecting off the metal roof.

I adore the meandering brick bridge to the back door – We often see this type of connector with very straight lines, but the way this curves is just a delight. Notice the detailing on the roof line and around the windows. Also notice the lovely copper overhang – beautiful. Now for a real treat let’s see inside!

Look at that fireplace, quite an architectural feature. The post and beams come right to the floor which I think is very interesting. The wood ceiling and floors balance the expanse of brick. One of my favorite details is the metal band around the fireplace. Also notice the arched entry ways which is repeated in the arch of the fireplace opening.

The kitchen is stunning! Notice there are almost no upper cabinets – the wall of arched windows is breathtaking. The black honed counters are nicely balanced by the black cabinet on the left.

Finally let’s have another look at the outstanding details on the exterior. It is wonderful to see such craftsmanship. A special thank you to Peter Montanti for his wonderful photo tour. Stunning Coastal Exterior and Interior Renovation

I am always intrigued by renovation. I especially marvel at exterior transformations and this beautiful home in New York is no exception.

On a breathtaking piece of property on the Long Island Sound it was a perfect home for renovation. Above is the Before - a wonderful, quaint colonial.

And here is the After: Notice the change in the roof lines - the original second story was expanded and a second story was also added to the original one story structure - These external additions changed the ordinary into extraordinary.

The kitchen renovation is stunning boasting state of the art appliances and marble counters. Notice the arched entrances between rooms.

I love the classic details of this kitchen including the subway backsplash tile, lighting, marble counters and the exquisite detailing on the corners of the center islands.

Looking from the other side of the center island we can see the dining and family room area. Notice the arched bookcases which echo the arches through out the first floor.

With the addition of a second story over the original one story structure, the owners were able to add a spectacular wood paneled library with fireplace and vaulted ceilings.

Again if look closely you can great details in the millwork of this room. The arched window provides a spectacular view of the Long Island Sound.

An infinity edge pool gives the illusion that the water's edge begins just steps outside the back door.
Wonderful coastal landscaping seamlessly bridges this outstanding home from land to sea.

Spectacular Pool Pavilion

In New England during the winter months we sometimes have to stay indoors - this year with so much snow, we have been indoors more than we have wanted to be. Our friend, the fabulous architect, Tom Catalano, of Catalano Architects, shared this gorgeous Pool Pavilion with me. A wonderful respite from the chilly, snowy days. Beautiful photography by the talented interior photographer, Eric Roth.

What a spectacular space. I love the post and beam ceiling details. It is wonderful oasis of natural lighting with french doors on three sides.

Here is a closer shot looking from the other side. Notice the ceiling beams and painted a gray green - it wonderfully compliments the wood doors and walls.

From this angle we can see the windows very high in ceiling to add even more light. No matter what the temperature outdoors, in this pool pavilion you immediately feel like you have escaped the winter and are at a fabulous resort.

Directly off the pool is a tranquil home gym and yoga studio. In this home it is easy to stay in shape all year long. If you look closely in the mirrors you can see the ceiling beams of the pool area.

Of course the house also boasts a gorgeous Billiards Room.

Look at stone work around the bar. Just stunning!!! This home has so much to offer on those days when you are snowed in and you just want to stay home.

Maine Coastal Gem!

My friend, the talented interior photographer, Jamie Salomon of James R. Salomon Photography, shared this fabulous home in Bar Harbor, Maine with me recently. He was kind enough to let me provide you a private tour .

The owners of this gorgeous historical home on the water wanted to do a renovation.

You can see how much character the home has and they wanted to keep that feeling so they called upon Anthony Barnes of Barnes Vanze Architects to help design their renovation. Let's have a look: The Entry Hall is a lovely of mix of old and new. Notice the stone arches which lead into the Dining Room. I like the choice of the wood and white paint on the staircase.

The Dining Room is just beautiful. Notice how the granite stone of the archway is echoed in the stone fireplace. Also notice the detailing in this room. I love the wood arched doorway and the built in; they both also echo the stone archway. Peeking further you can see the stunning wood and marble Butler's Pantry.

Also notice the coffered ceilings which add an additional layer of detail - the ceilings are very high, so it also brings them down a bit - I also love the turned wood chandelier.

Here is a close up of the Butler's Pantry area. It is interesting to me that french doors open up right beside it. I think this is a great idea, and a very thoughtful part of the design, to have access to the Pantry for entertaining indoors and out. Great architects always think ahead!

Moving to the Kitchen we see more period style details incorporated like this charming oval window over the sink.

Pulling back and getting a larger view of the kitchen you can see how every inch of space was utilized including under the stairs. Also notice the stone work and the transition of stone to plaster up the staircase. I love this effect and how it cleverly solves the design problem - so you don't harshly have stone butted up against plaster.

Another kitchen view where you can see an antique fireback incorporated into the white subway tile behind the stove. Wonderful combinations of old and new!

The family room captures the views of the water at every turn. You can only see a bit of the fireplace, but it is also the same granite stone we have been seeing in other parts of the house. Perfect coastal decor with antiques, sisal rugs and slipcovers. Notice the ceiling detail - love it!

Finally a perfect tub for a perfect retreat - Isn't this a beautiful home in Maine??

Design Trends!

The final installment of my trip to Market was to look at the overall design trends for 2011.

We saw a lot of furniture that mimicked Tara Shaw Maison and Aidan Gray - some were more rustic like Restoration Hardware, some were more chippy and distressed. There were a variety of price points and quality. But if you are interested in this look you will be able to find it at any price. My only caution when shopping is to look at the finishes - some of these vendors are doing great work that looks authentic and others are not. I was very impressed with almost all the pieces from BLISS (above) - they were my favorite vendor for quality versus price.

We continued to see in almost every showroom neutrals and linens. This bedding ensemble from Legacy Linens was just beautiful.

But the one new element we noticed the most was the introduction of more organic and textural type materials. We saw more rattan, raw wood and specifically we saw a lot of driftwood/wood.

We saw wood made into sculptures like this wonderful horse -

And this large seahorse!

Pieces like this mirror were in several showrooms but Currey and Company seemed to have the best selection and the best quality.

Here it is with several lamps with wood bases.

This large mirror was just striking - and notice the chandelier in front.

They had several other interesting Chandeliers like this trellis style.

We fell in love with this standing lamp - we loved the texture and scale.

Their smaller lamps were also interesting. They had several styles like this ball lamp.

and the figure - we loved this one.

Over all we saw little departure from the past year - most vendors playing it safe and neutral with lots of gray, taupe and brown. It was a great trip and I came back even more inspired than before, with many new sources with quality products. I would be interested to hear how you all feel about seeing more of this look and your thoughts on trends for 2011.

Tara Shaw Maison - America's Mart Part III

One of my most favorite areas at the Market is the "High Design" section. It houses beautiful temporary showrooms dedicated to those designers that have very exclusive lines. Of course Tara Shaw was there, amid a backdrop of chocolate brown walls, with the most beautiful furniture.

It was so fun to see my friend Tara Shaw again! As usual her "Maison" Line stopped everyone in their tracks. She has added over thirty new pieces and her beautiful collection has over 75 items now. Let's have a look at some of my favorites:

The Italian Grisaille Panels were just stunning. You all know how I love Grisaille (to read my post on Grisaille click HERE). These panels were almost a perfect pair in gorgeous sepia tones.

Her new upholstered pieces were also beautiful. I loved this Italian Monogram Chair. It can be custom monogrammed to your specifications.

People were buzzing around the Baroque Canape - the back is removable so it is like two different pieces in one.

The silver leaf bench had a much more beautiful finish than my camera captured and look at all that hand carving.

The Italian Fragment mirror would be a fabulous focal point in any room - it's beauty really commands attention.

It was hung over this Italian Buffet. The finish of soft blues and golds were just extraordinary.

Of course she also had her signature lighting, but this Gilded Iron Corona Chandelier really caught my eye.

And the popularity of her small crowns prompted her to create this Corona on a stand. So many beautiful new things to see and wish for!! If you are interested in purchasing any of these fabulous items do let me know and I can send on pricing and shipping estimates.

America's Mart International Home Furnishing Market -Part I - Bobo Intriguing Objects

What a fabulous time I had in Atlanta this past weekend. I traveled with my BFF, Diane who is a Designer in Virginia Beach. We just had so much fun!! "Di"and I also met up with Millie, my Designer friend from New Orleans, who is now the exclusive Designer for Tara Shaw, but more about that later in the week. (You can read all about my previous trip to New Orleans to shop with Millie HERE). We spent three LONG days visiting showroom after showroom and seeing the most recent products and trends for 2011.Over the next week I will profile several of my favorite stops. Today lets have a look at the amazing items from BoBo Intriguing Objects. You might remember that BoBo is the brain child of Mark Sage and Rudi Nijssen, the celebrated designers/manufacturers that have recently partnered up with Restoration Hardware. You can read a great interview with Mark Sage by Brooke at Velvet and Linen HERE. Mark also owns Love Train Antiques, but unfortunately I did not have time to go there this trip. Let's have a look at the Bobo Showroom. I was so charmed by these wine jug sphere pendent lamps. I loved the installation of several sizes hung together. Also notice the ceiling mounts, they were beautiful and a perfect compliment to the fixture. This is where Bobo always sets themselves apart; they do not skimp and have a wonderful attention to detail.

Mark is a master of "the collections", and these domes really caught my eye.

Also these wonderful copper pails - You can do so much with these - I envision them with plants and food, and silverware. Beautiful catch-alls in a boy's room or mud room - How about a set on bench filled with mittens and hats??? The table was also a find. I adored the metal detail that wrapped around the edges.

Another collection that really caught my eye was the mercury glass cake stands. Again these lend themselves to so many different uses. The wood carved angel wings really make a statement as well. Can't wait to find the right client's entry or console table to display these beauties.

I love all things with a Swedish flair and the Halo crowns remounted on metal stands really resonated with me.

Of course it wasn't all Home Decor for us - Di and I met a few celebrities as well! Here we are with Cat Cora from Iron Chef, who just launched a new line of cookware! She is a such a tiny little thing in person (remember I am only 5' 2"). Cat is on the right and that's Di on the left.

We also got a chance to finally meet and have lunch with Holly of Things that Inspire. Holly and I have been blog friends for years and it was such a treat to finally meet her in person. Her blog is one my favorites, you can read it HERE.

Gorgeous Downsizing

Recently there has been a huge increase in the news that the era of the McMansion is coming to a close. It is said that as the baby boomers move into retirement many are wanting to downsize. Of course downsizing immediately conjures up images of a smaller cramped and uninteresting house, but not if you are acclaimed architect Peter Zimmerman. A master of proportion and scale, Zimmerman, generally designs larger homes, but was intrigued about developing a home limited to 2,500 square feet. This home is part of a community of smaller homes in Pennsylvania.
Notice his great attention to detail - the thicker clapboards, copper gutters and balcony millwork. Which is echoed inside in the loft millwork. Here is the view from the entryway Though not grand in size, the open floor plan gives the illusion of much larger space. The larger scale of the fireplace balances the cathedral ceiling height. Notice the wall of built ins; the home was thoughtfully designed with lots of storage. Furnishings are neutral, using primarily linens and seagrass rugs to bring more texture to the space and enhance the gorgeous barn beams and beadboard ceilings.
Right beyond the dining area is the small kitchen with center island. The window placement and the walkway/hallway between the two spaces adds to the illusion of a larger kitchen.
Off the great room is a cozy study with another fireplace. The master suite is on the first floor and the house has a loft with two additional bedrooms. With a home so thoughtfully designed and wonderfully decorated it seems to easy to downsize. To read more about this beautiful home click here. Light Up The New Year with Fire and Ice!!

Happy New Year!! We will be outdoors tonight enjoying some fireworks on New Year's Eve. We will be watching them from a dear friend's beautiful outdoor patio. I was trying to come up with a wonderful hostess gift and decided to make some Ice Sculpture Luminaries.

I have always been fascinated by the the combination of Fire and Ice. I love the warm ambiance it creates. Of course they can be made with just water, but I love the rustic feeling the addition of evergreens and pinecones bring. Here is a wonderful how to pictorial I found:

You need two bowls, one much larger than the other. Fill 1/3 of the large bowl with water. Add pinecones and evergreens.

Place the smaller bowl inside the larger bowl

Weight the smaller bowl down with a large rock. Freeze several hours outdoors or in your freezer - it's been so cold that for us outdoors works fine!!

To unmold run warm water over the larger bowl to release ice sculpture. Add a candle and enjoy!

Swedish Winter Retreat in Vail

Several months ago a reader sent me these photos of a beautiful ski home in Vail, Colorado. She thought I would love the Swedish decor which is so unusual in a ski home. The dramatic entry immediately caught my eye.

Of course I fell in love the hand painting on the walls and the beautiful Swedish Mora clock.Most ski homes are predominately wood and stone, but I loved the lightness of this space. The cathedral ceilings and natural wood floors are enhanced by the pale green painted cabinets and soft yellow painted furniture. Notice the chairs are each embellished with the birth dates of owners and their children. I love the gorgeous natural light streaming into the kitchen area. The living room also has incredible light. The blue delft tile fireplace is lovely. Again notice the painted furniture, lace curtains, light upholstery and rugs - so unique for ski house.

I like how designer, Jan Chenault, mixed antiques with reproductions, like this amoire with a mirrored front to disguise the weight of the piece and to reflect light around the room. Very smart!

But my favorite is the Ski Locker Room. I love the paint combination on the ski lockers.
It also looks like the owners names are painted on them in blue. What a wonderful retreat for a lucky family.

Memories of Christmas' Past

Let's travel back to a Christmas forty years ago.

It's Christmas Eve in 1970. I am 6 years old and anxiously awaiting Santa's arrival! That is me in the front on the left, my Mother and other sisters are behind me and to the right. My Father is taking the picture of his wife and four girls.

My Mother is a hairdresser and every Holiday we MUST have our long hair curled. My memories of Christmas Eve will always be connected with the smell of shampoo and the uncomfortable feeling of sleeping in sponge curlers. We do not have much money. We have just exchanged "Sister Gifts", small things we have bought or made for each other. Exchanging them on Christmas Eve makes them seem more magical and important.

I am dreaming of getting a Teeter Totter watch from Santa. It seems like a grown up gift for a 6 year old who likely can not tell time, but I want to be older like my sisters.

Unbeknownst to us my Mother has been saving oatmeal boxes...

And fashioning them into doll cradles, like this one above. Money is tight, but she wants us to have lots of presents to open on Christmas morning. Over the years it becomes a reminder to me of how blessed I was being surrounded by such a loving family.

I will be spending Christmas with my sisters and their families, as my parents have been gone for quite some time now. So I send on my Christmas wish for you: To be surrounded by people who love and care about you. Thank you, my friends, for allowing me into your homes for another wonderful year.

I am sending you all very heartfelt wishes for a joyful holiday from my family to yours.

My Childhood Bedroom & Giving Back

Two wonderful bloggers, Claudia from StoneHouse Love and Beth from Hello Splendor recently announced their charity campaign: Blog for Digs to support Dwell with Dignity. This organization has a mission to help families escape poverty and homelessness and to help them maintain a standard of living they can be proud of and thrive in. To raise awareness they are asking over 55 bloggers to blog about their childhood bedrooms.

The bedroom above is pretty close the bedroom I dreamed of having as a little girl. It was in the big Sears catalogue - a lovely confection of pink rosebuds and white. Above is a modern day version by Laura Ashley of my childhood dream.

We were not a wealthy family but my mother was very resourceful - She found wallpaper very similar to this one for $1 a roll at a discount warehouse. Luckily there was enough to cover my entire bedroom that I shared with my younger sister.

She also bought us two small desks and painted them lime green!

My mother was a great seamstress and fashioned us curtains that looked like awnings out of pink and green striped fabric, similar to the ones above. Though not my dream of pink rosebuds, it was a happy room and I have many memories of staring at the floral patterns and planning my future and dreaming my dreams.

Simon Pearce Evergreen Trees and 3 Fine Grains Giveaway Winner!

Several Christmases ago Dave presented me a beautiful box tied with a purple ribbon. I unwrapped the most gorgeous crystal evergreen tree. I had never seen one before, but Dave spied it in the city and knew I would love it. It remains one of my most cherished gifts. Each year he adds to my collection. My Simon Pearce Crystal Evergreen Trees remain my favorite collection.

I keep them out all year, but during the holidays I add my collection of antique mirror and mercury glass trees. All together they make a spectacular display in the Conservatory on our piano. They reflect the snow and sunlight during the day and Christmas tree lights in the evening.

They are really stunning and a true work of art as each one is hand blown by master artisans in Vermont.

This year Simon Pearce added the bubble trees. These have tiny air bubbles in them to imitate snow. They are very pretty too, and prefer them mixed in with the clear ones.

Simon Pearce has a wonderful video showing the intense process and mastery needed to create one of these beautiful trees. You can view it HERE.

The Boston store has this wonderful table display using the trees as an interesting centerpiece. I just may want to create a similar display on Christmas Day on my own holiday table. The way they sparkle and catch the light is just magical.

Tonight is my annual Cookie Exchange. I have been hosting a Cookie Exchange almost every year since 1995. During the early years we moved often, but even though I barely knew my neighbors, I invited everyone over for some Holiday cocktails and a cookie swap. It was a great way to get to know people and have some fun. This year we are having a big turn out. My neighbors and I always look forward to it as a nice and welcome respite during the crazy Holiday season.

I usually make Pizzelles. They are a traditional Italian wafer cookie. You make them on a special waffle-like iron. My kids love them.

The 3 Fine Grains Giveaway!!!

Several years ago when I met Kimberley Fraser, owner of 3 Fine Grains, she was just starting out. An accomplished Interior Designer turned Antique Textile Artist, Kym had the wonderful idea of creating, furniture, pillows and other accessories from Antique French and German Grainsacks.

Her textiles are authentic, original, antique grain sacks. As I have mentioned in the past, these textiles are very expensive and as such Kym's beautiful items are really heirlooms to treasure

Today we are seeing the grainsack trend everywhere but Kym was a pioneer and one of the first. You might have recently seen Kym's pillows in Country Living Magazine. You see a magazine editor was visiting me and admiring my pillows from Kym. I was so happy to tell her all about 3 Fine Grains. She contacted Kym and several months later there were Kym's beautiful pillows on the pages of the October issue of Country Living! I was so thrilled for her!!

Kym has become so popular via the blog world and through her website that she has just opened up her own shop in Agoura Hills, CA called A Beautiful Mess.

The shop is gorgeous and chock full of antiques, textiles and other fabulous goodies.

I am always excited to hear about her new designs. In my experience 3 Fine Grains will always be on the cutting edge of the home accessory trends. In fact, watch for the January Issue of Romantic Homes Magazine for an article about Kym's store A Beautiful Mess! Kym's designs are getting very sought after and she is on the rise.

Unfortunately we don't all live near A Beautiful Mess, but you can call Kym and she will send out what ever you see here on Willow Decor ! Here are some of my favorites:

I love these grainsack rosettes ($25), created with found objects and bling! They can be Christmas ornaments or tie them to a wine bottle to create a really spectacular gift.

Or look at these amazing grainsack Christmas stockings ($69). They also come embellished with the grainsack rosettes ($95).

Or these spectacular doves made with antique French Linen and antique button eyes. They really stole my heart. As with all of Kym's designs, because they are antiques and one of a kinds, there is a limited supply.
