Zinc Counters & Zinc Tables

What is it about zinc counters and tables? Maybe its the juxtaposition of a material that should be cold yet exudes such a warmth and tactile feel. Handcrafted Metal
Above is a kitchen I adore! Perhaps its also the white cabinetry and soapstone which you all know I am so partial to, but also I love the worn look of the center island. It is a material you just want to touch. It looks like an actual family lives here!

Here is a lovely countertop that my friend, Paul Anater of Kitchen and Residential Design just posted last week. Paul is very talented kitchen designer and writes a wonderful blog. Be sure to check out his work and his excellent eye for design at http://paulanater.blogspot.com/search?updated-max=2009-01-31T06%3A18%3A00-05%3A00&max-results=5

What a wonderful time worn look in this kitchen - but its brand new! Isn't it wonderful? I love the edge detailing on the zinc. Here is a great example of excellent craftsmanship.

Here is another example of an edge style. These details really add to finished feeling of the room.

Here is a more simple edge style but the results are beautiful. The patina of the zinc really adds to this rooms farmhouse feel.

Another simple edge with great results. Not sure if the perimeter is soapstone or zinc, but either way the results are lovely. It is also a surface that can be mixed easily with other materials. Metallo Arts
If the plain edge seems too rustic for you, here are some beautiful edge details which can be incorporated into your design. With so many design options, this is a surface which can be used in many different styles of homes.

Not sure about zinc in the kitchen? The bar and pantry above serve as a great way to add in the patina and texture with out the huge commitment of having it as your center island surface.

Of course zinc is not limited to counters. There are many styles of tables available too. I love this Gatehouse base!

I love all three of these tables from Pennsylvania - Any one of them would perfect in my new breakfast room - how to decide?

Or perhaps I should stop by Avant Garden in New York? More beautiful examples!

Finally, of course, we could stop by Treillage, Bunny Williams store in NYC , and pick up one of these fabulous finds. Adding zinc to your home, how could you go wrong?

  1. Oooooo, my favorite is the top kitchen also! I wanted soapstone or honed granite but my builder "didn't do that." I especially love the island. Maybe someday I'll change mine. Maybe I'll save the idea. Thanks for passing it on.

  2. oh I am absolutely loving this. The first photo is my favorite, and I can see that in my house (you've got my wheels spinning now of how I can do it)- I love metal and rough hewn wood together - and that it's a little softer than the industrial feel of stainless - it almost looks like pewter, doesn't it? Lovely! Thanks for sharing this!

  3. Amazing - I never considered zinc as a counter top option. I love zinc in small doses but I'd really have to touch it to see if I'd like it, and see it up close. I do love the rustic look, but metal seems so cold. I like your idea of using it in the pantry or for smaller pieces of furniture! Great post!

  5. Such fabulous pictures! Especially the tables. I have been coveting a zinc-topped table for ages, and I would give my right arm for one, but they are as rare as hens teeth in Australia!

  9. Gina-- such a fun post! I love, LOVE zinc top tables. They make me swoon!! You've given me some ideas for a kitchen table- thanks! I'm a plain-edge kind of girl, but those elaborate edges with the zinc are sublime! My other favorite is the round table with the large nailhead finish.

And thank you for your comment on my counter/island top choices! I adore your kitchen & butler's pantry remodel; I truly don't think I've seen a prettier b. pantry! Remember I asked about the T&C fireplace- we have ours ordered and hopefully will go in soon! joan

  22. I was wondering if you might know what the backsplash tile material is behind the kitchen range in the first picture? I am looking to do a similar look behind mine, soapstone counters, and cream cabinetry. Thanks!

  23. I really like the counter in the second picture...and the wet bar with the rectangular shape...
I too wonder about scratching. In any event, they are beautiful!
    Blessings.

  24. I have a zinc countertop in my kitchen and it is so beautiful. It does mark easily, so you have to do one of two things. Try as hard as you can to get it "antiqued" as quickly as possible for a great patina - easy for me with 4 children- or use it in a place where it will not get much wear and tear. The edge detail is what makes the zinc countertops, so be sure to use one you love.

  28. Soapstone countertops may be difficult to replace if there are damages or cracks on the surface because each slab has its own unique pattern and shade.
