Those White and Cream Cow Hide Rugs

Suzanne Kasler
I am really enamored with white/cream cow hide rugs. They seem to add another layer of richness and beauty to so many different style interiors. Here is a lovely room designed by the wonderful Suzanne Kasler. Southern Accents
I especially love cow hide rugs over sisal or seagrass. In this room the rug seems to compliment all furnishings; notice the side table and Ghost chair. Jan Showers
The combination of the natural floor covering and the sumptuousness of the cow hide really speaks to me.

I think they add a luxurious layer of texture and interest to room. Here is the wonderful bedroom of Sally Wheat, brought to us by Joni of Cote de Texas. You can read all about the rest of Sally's house here. Cote de Texas
Sally renovated the many rooms including the living room. Here is the photo from the cover of Houston House and Home. You can read all about her more recent renovation here.

Here the fabulous Jan Showers layers the cow hide over white rug. It adds a layer of richness to this room. Veranda
Though not quite cream, I wanted to include Vincent Wolfe's gorgeous room. Here the cow hide is layered over a lighter rug and creates a luxurious effect.

=The cow hides seem to work in many different decors. Here it looks fabulous in this more masculine and modern room.

Of course in more modern interiors, like this bedroom the cow hide softens the hard edges of the furniture and the space.

They also look beautiful laying on a hardwood floor - In this room I love the mix of the hard lines of the mirrors and coffee tables with the softness of linen sofa, throw and cow hide rug.

I find the cowhide rug a more interesting choice than the traditional needlepoint or aubusson rug. With the yellow chairs, it adds a layer of unexpected edginess to this room.
The darker floors also really make the rug stand out.

Finally here is one my favorite rooms. I think the the cow hide rug looks so lovely in this very neutral interior. What do think?

  3. Thank you for a wonderful post. I completely agree with you on this one - the white hides are so beautiful! I have a feeling everyone else thinks so too because I ordered them for my shop a month ago and they are still out of stock!
Thanks again for a great visual!

  4. I have one and I love it!
In fact you can see it on the post I have up now about the Apartment Therapy Room For Color Contest.
Not only does the white cow hide look pretty with all the pale colors you love, it looks great with the saturated colors I love.
And cow hides wear so well - no pet hair or dirt really shows between a light vacuuming.
I also like them draped on furniture. I saw a white sofa at Moss in New York, with a white cow hide draped on it, and it was great!

  6. I love this post - although I am not a huge fan of cowhide rugs, it was a treat to see them is so many different settings (and in several of my favorite designers' rooms).

  7. Thumbs up for cowhide rugs. We're beginning the process of turning a barn into a home. One of those rugs would be so cool. Great idea.

  10. Oh Dear, I'd rather see the hide on the cow than on the floor. The rugs have been done to death, much like chandeliers in kitchens and rustic coastal interiors...

  12. Love it! I am much more fond of these than I am of the zebra. I agree with you too, right on top of the seagrass.

  14. Love this post! I add hides a lot to rooms over rugs because I like how they add depth to a room and they don't have straight edges so they aren't so harsh. Great collection of images!

  15. I'm still loving the zebra hide, there's something about the glamour the stripes bring to the room. I really love these white/cream ones as well though - stunning! I especially love the second last room. Great color scheme!

  19. How do you keep these rugs from slipping?

    Is there a secret?

  20. In response to the question from ottertrail38:
the hides are actually large and quite heavy and the back is like rough suede so they really don't move much once they are laid down. These came in my store today and it was an effort for me to spread them out myself because of the weight and size. They can be felt backed but I think that moves more.
