Danish Wedding Plans

We all are heading to Denmark this summer. When I say "we all" I mean my three sisters, their husbands and children - my entire side of the family. We total 11 people. My parents, who have since passed away, had four girls and I am sister number three. Sister number two lives part of the year in California and part of the year in Denmark. She has lived between two countries for most of her adult life.
Many years ago when I lived in Germany, we often visited her in Denmark. We did a lot of sightseeing and antiquing. She knew the best out of the way barns and I found some terrific Danish pine pieces.
Sister number two is getting married in August and having a traditional Danish wedding. Her fiancee is a native of Copenhagen, Denmark. My children, and their cousins, are in the wedding and they are all very excited. The photo above is the Danish Royal couple; Crown Prince Frederik and Crown Princess Mary. Just like a living fairytale!
She has planned some great sightseeing for us. One stop we hope to make is Rosenborg Castle in Copenhagen.
I plan to get plenty of photos of the plate room for my friend, Valorie at Visual Vamp. She would love this.
To keep the children ages 5 through 12 happy we also plan to stop at Tivoli Gardens.
But, back to the wedding. Here is another photo of the Royal couple - I just had to keep this one in it's so romantic. Sister number two has agreed to let me do a post on her wedding when I return. The plans sound really wonderful so watch for that in September.
After the wedding, my husband, children (ages 10 and 12) and I are heading to the Bernese Oberland area of Switzerland. We are staying in the wonderful little village of Wengen. No cars are allowed in Wengen you can only get there by cog wheel train.
We plan do a few days of hiking, which no doubt will inspire me to sing songs from The Sound of Music. The kids have asked me to promise to not break out into song. But it that may prove difficult because the scenery is so spectacular.
We may travel over to Thun to see the Schadau Castle.Or stumble upon some other unexpected and delightful sights. Then we spend our final days in Zurich. We very excited.
.
So, my international and well traveled readers, I am requesting any information about out of the way locations that we may want to stop in and see while we are there. These are those not to miss spots that unless you have traveled or lived in the area, an average tourist would not know about. So, if you have a moment or a thought, do let me know.
.
Oh my, I feel a song coming on... lucky for you I have no audio feature.

  1. Oh go ahead - break out into song! I am so looking forward to your posts. How romantic! I've never been to those countries so can't offer any suggestions - but I'll be a happy passenger on your tours!

  2. Oh Gina, you will have the best time you've ever had at a wedding! Danish weddings are legendary. I went to my cousin's wedding 2 years ago and it started at around 1 pm and ended at 3 am and we left early! They go on forever with many activities/traditions in between and they are the best! Where in Denmark is the wedding? Enjoy your trip, I know you will!

  5. I can't wait to hear about the trip when you return! We are discussing a trip to Europe next summer, but we can't go until mid-July, which is quite hot in Italy and France. Switzerland is looking awfully good!

  6. How lovely! My only advice is to make sure that your camera works! I visited many of the beautiful spots you mentioned back in the early nineties with a camera that was a gift from a family member. I saw so many wonderful things and took sooo many pictures....and later found out that the camera didn't work. The only picture that turned out...but was double exposed...was of Tivoli. I'm so thankful that I have a picture perfect memory!

    Have fun!

  7. Uhhh..my family and I (11 of us, too) are going to Disney World, and you're going to DENMARK!!! Somehow I think we booked the wrong trip! You must take tons of pictures to share with us. It's just such beautiful country (or so I've heard). By the way, Princess Mary's dress is perhaps one of the most beautiful I've ever seen! So simple, yet gorgeous!

  12. Hi Gina,
sounds like a lot of fun. Unfortunately I haven't been in Zürich for at least 20 years - so cannot give you any update on today's specialities. The landscapes in Switzerland is the best of this country anyway - so enjoy the mountains.
If you should have any special questions - ask anyway. Maybe I can help nevertheless.
    Greetings from Munich, Petra

  13. Gina, this sounds like an amazing trip and I am so envious of you!!! I was in Denmark on a buying trip the day after the Crown Prince Frederik and Crown Princess Mary were married. I had my daughter (4th grade at the time) with me and the city was amass with flowers and energy. It was a wonderful time to be there.

How did you chose to visit the Bernese Oberland area? I would love to go there sometime as my beloved dog Gus is a Bernese Mountain dog which originates from that part of Switzerland.

You are going to have weeks and weeks of wonderful posts for us. I can't wait!

  19. Looks fantastic Gina - I bet you are counting the sleeps already! Loved the pics of Fred & Mary - she's one of ours, a local girl from Tasmania. I love how she met Fred in a pub in Sydney during a Girls Night Out. This is truly the stuff fairy tales are made of & it sounds like your sweet sister is in the middle of her own too!
